Junior Club Run
The ride is on alternate Saturdays at 12 Noon from the Scalby Rugby Club.
This is a Scarborough Paragon Club activity and has nothing to do with school, nor is it a
coaching session or a training ride, just a bunch of us going for an easy ride together.
Membership in the Cycling Club is not required. Adults and parents are also welcome on these rides
- the idea is to form a Club Run which is more appropriate for less experienced riders who would
find the main Club Run too strenuous.
The route
will be out along the disused railway line, perhaps coming back along the roads. Later rides
will be road riding, over gradually increasing distances, but never so far or fast as to be hard.
Enthusiastic riders can use these runs as a feeder for the main club runs. All of this will be
discussed amonst the participants during the rides. On later rides we will eat at Cafes.
Here are some requirements and suggestions for the rides
This may seem a bit off-putting, so don't worry if you don't have all this stuff, just come
with anything you
have, and decide for yourself later what you need.
- Fix your bike! If there is anything wrong with your bike, it's not going to get any better as
you ride it. We won't be going that far on these rides, but even so you don't
want to find yourself in the middle of nowhere with a broken bike.
- A Mountain bike will be OK for the first runs, but we will be riding on roads so a road bike will
make it much easier for later.
- Bring a spare inner tube of correct size and correct valve type. It is much
easier and faster to put a new inner tube in than repair one and some failures can't be repaired.
- Tyre levers (set of 3). You need the minimal set of tools to work on the bike. If your wheels
don't have quick release hubs, you will need the appropriate spanner to get the wheel off.
- I carry a puncture repair kit as well as a spare tube. Sometimes you get more than one
puncture.
- A pump that fits your inner tube valve. It's no good fixing the puncture if you can't pump the tyre
back up!
- Wear appropriate clothing for the weather. You don't realy need cycling clothes, though we do
wear them for a reason - it's much easier to ride. In summer you are more likely to be too hot
than too cold, but do think about the possibilities. Wear sunblock. Even on an overcast day
you will be out for hours and can get burned.
- Under 18's must wear a properly certified helmet. This is not just bureaucracy. Even in
minor accidents your head will hit the road pretty hard.
- Water bottle. Riding in hot weather without water is very uncomfortable indeed. Don't try
fizzy drinks - plain water or diluted fruit juice is OK. If you are feeling a bit serious, a commercial
sports drink with electrolytes and glucose is good.
- If it's raining, we won't ride, but it may rain during the ride. Look at the weather forecast and
bring a waterproof if rain is likely.
- It is most important that you make an arrangement for pickup by car if your bike breaks, or
for a cancelled or short run or if there is an accident. We won't ride you out into the middle of
nowhere, then abandon you, but
you are responsible for yourself. Carry a mobile phone (in a plastic bag to keep it dry) and make
sure someone can recover you and your bike.
- To make adjustments to your bike it is usefull to carry a minitool, which has several alan keys
and screwdriver blades.
- Bring some cash just in case. I take £10, including some £1 coins for public telephones. The
cafe stops will usually cost only £3-4.
- Don't bring an MP3 player - you need to keep your attention on riding, especially in a group.
- Go to the toilet before you leave home - it might be some time before you get back and we
don't have access to the Rugby Club facilities.
We won't be doing a preride inspection to see if you have done all the above - it's your choice -
but please plan ahead.
